About Costas Christ
In addition to leading Beyond Green Travel, Costas Christ is an awarding-winning editor and columnist for National Geographic Traveler. In 2012, Costas was recognized along with Sir Richard Branson, Ted Turner, Dr. Jane Goodall and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as one of 50 Global Visionaries working to save the planet. NBC News said: “For the past 30 years, Costas Christ has been at the leading edge of the green travel movement, since way before it was ever called ‘green’ or even a movement.” He serves as Chairman of the National Geographic World Legacy Awards, in partnership with ITB Berlin, which recognize sustainable tourism best practices that support the protection of cultural and natural heritage. He was also the Chairman of the World Travel and Tourism Council – Tourism for Tomorrow Awards from 2004-2014. Costas frequently appears on television and radio as a guest travel expert, with appearances on Travel Channel, BBC World, Good Morning America, CNN International, National Public Radio, NatGeo TV and National Geographic Weekend, among others. He has traveled to more than 130 countries (at last count) and his stories have appeared in many of the world’s top publications, including the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, and Sunday Times of London. In addition, Costas is special advisor and Director of Sustainability for Virtuoso, one of the largest travel trade organizations in the world. In 2008, he was honored as a ‘Tourism Visionary’ by the International Restaurant and Hotel Awards. His travel column in National Geographic has received the NATJA Gold Prize and two Bronze Awards for best environmental travel writing for three consecutive years – 2011, 2012, and 2013. Costas was also nominated for the Heinz Award, one of the most prestigious United States awards given to an individual for their outstanding work supporting conservation, cultural heritage, and the arts. When not exploring the world, he spends his time at home on an organic farm in Maine.
